haveing owned or leased a 7140, 5488, and a 1586 I know a bit about them all. yes the Magnum was best (new brooms sweep well) and from my cousin the IH engineer they were most trouble free! the tranny is a funkbro's with some plastic parts but they are OK! OH and the engine is NOT CUMMINS-- its CDC a cummins-Case company (there is a difference) the 5488 was a stop gap between the 86 and magnum.. it has a "quad range" type tranny that has had problems in higher hours or tough use. and the fan does pull on ALL cooling fans this onw is just infront so you do have to check bearings OFTEN we didnt... lost one!, we got it with 4500hrs and sent packing when bearing parts started coming out the remote cuplers. 1586--- great motor bad everything behind it and under it.. trany needed another gear, torque was out every spring on May 5th--yes 5 out of the 7yrs we had it, the rear end bull gear oiling got us too. hydralic pumps went we traded iton the 5488 when it had 2300hrs.
