I am a PC guy. That's what I am familiar with and that's the main reason. Unlike some others, I have had several computers, desktops and laptops, over the years, all Dells...and never really had any problem with any of them. I would steer away from emachines, HP, Compaq, etc...I have had friends/neighbors with these machines, but they don't have them for long. Right now I am banging away on a dell with a boatload of "miles" on it....and it still functions like it did when I first got it. Windows XP is the ticket, and don't get involved with a cheap processor like a Celeron. I have nothing bad to say about macs, just never had one. I would try one without hesitation, I guess, if money was no object. It does seem to me that folks who go Mac never go back...either that or they just like to be different. (?)
