It would help use help you if you also said what the tractor is. With a 12 volt coil that is if its a true 12 volt coil then you would have to have a 12 volt battery or you will not get enough spark for it to run or at least run well. Now as far as the genny well it could still be a 6 volt one or it may have been rewired for 12 volts. About the only way to chack that would be to take it to a rebuild shop where they have the equipment to test it
