Like JJ pointe out when the engine is new it is much tighter than before the rebuild and thus takes more power to turn it over. The starter may have been in a marginal condition when you went to start it along with the extra load caused the starter to melt down. You almost would want to tow the tractor the first time and get it started. Then after it has a chance to run for a while, start to use the starter. In reality the starter should be able to handle a rebuilt as long as it is in good condition. Good Luck
