F.I.L. is starting a feed business, he's got a nice machine shed to work out of, but the floor is packed waste ag-lime, and his driveway is loose gravel. The barn isn't the largest around. Right now he's using his 6400 JD and 640 loader to move pallets around, but visibility is a challenge to see the forks to get pallets stuck right w/o biting bags, and it gets really tight in the barn to get things stacked up, so he can't use the barn to the best of its potential. His feed pallets are going to weigh in around 2200#, but we'd like to figure some extra capacity. the local tractor dealer wants to sell him an older skid loader b/c he says they have less trouble w/ the older machines than the newer ones. I worked at a coop w/ an 1845C case, and 2200# was about all you wanted, it would pick up the pallet, but it would also lift the rear as well. I'm a little leary of the loaders the dealer is pushing him, a large sized used loader in the $5000 range...hydro problems come to mind real quick. I suggested an older tractor, possibly a narrow front w/ a rear mounted forklift attachment might be handy, or one of the "rough terrain" fork lifts that amount to a mid sized tractor turned around and a mast permantly attached. The value of the flexibility of the 2nd tractor, or the skid loader appeals to him. Does any one have any suggestions?
