My last tractor (before the 8N) was a Farmall Cub; and my 8N is missing the proof meter. Now I'm looking at Ford 3000s. Although I'd really prefer gas, am mostly finding diesels. But I'm up the creek judging their condition. I get double talk from people selling 'em; especially as to the hours. I read some of the meters as 8,000 hours yet "they" refer to them as 8-hundred. Even saw one today with what I read as 21,000 yet it was called 21-hundred. Most of it is my stupidity, but what are the significant digits on a proofmeter? What are the shaded numbers to the right? And what real significance is hours on a diesel engine. Yeah, I know, like miles on a car, but I have a feel for that. Please, somebody impart some smarts on this dumb hillbilly before I mess up on buysing a tractor. -Gale-
