Starter Problems - Electrical

Tractor has been sitting most of the winter, in the barn went out to start it and all I got was clicking of the solenoid, topped up the battery , cleaned the connections , but no go, tried the stuck in gear thing , not that , I am in the process of removing the starter for test, on the bench, The small wire and the small post on top of the solenoid goes to the starter button , right, If I connect pos terminal on the solenoid to a battery and connect neg to body of starter , that should spin the starter. Any help Thanks.
