I once had a 4.3 in one of my trucks. What do you mean by chattering? From From reading your post , this problem started happening at the time you tromped on the gas , and passed a car. After letting off the gas , it stopped. But still makes the noise at certain RPM's. I've had that problem 3 times , with the same truck(4.3 engine). Sounds to me that what you're hearing is the fan blade hitting the plastic shroud. Very Very hard to see marks. Look very closely. Mine scraped off to one side , near the bottom (don't remember which side). This happened , due to motor mount going bad (also very hard to see). I over worked the little truck by loading heavy/pulling trailer. Machanic friend told me 4.3 has weak motor mounts. I'll bet if the guy with the suburban had the same problem , they replaced the motor mounts at the time of rebuild. Maybe it didn't need rebuilding , just motor mounts. Hope this helps

Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
