Maybe I`m wrong, but I disagree with Your opinion about not needing preheat for strength. The idea of preheat and post heat is to minimize the "heat affected zone" or HAZ. With arc welding you get some pretty intense localized heating of the material being heated. This causes changes to the granular structure of the metal and induces stress to the part, normally on both sides of the weld. Consequently, you end up with differing rates of expansion throughout the part, and then you end up with a crack on one side or the other of your weld. Cast material is very susceptible to this condition. Your best bet is to use pre and post heat. I hope I haven`t stepped on any toes, just offering my two cents.
