4'8.5" rail track is that of New South Wales(Australia) The first state colonised by the English. Just the place to dump their prisioners ,[year 1788]however, the Horses A$$ doesn't rate when it comes to State jealousies. Victoria being the next state decided on 5'3". South Australia opted for 3'6" or was it Tasmania, or both. Some attempt has been made to standardise but it's painfully slow.Trains don't seem to rate with the Politicians.
