We cant have cats "in" the poultry house due to biosecurity procedures. I have been trying to keep cats around the place but they all end up at the house crapping in my garage because they like to be around the people. I know what you mean about cats being the best deterent, just cant seem to get them to stay where the mice may be. Sure helped for the house though. This last cleanout for some reason we had thousands, and I mean thousands of mice, didnt realize we had any till we started taking the manure out. Did not see a single mouse last year when we cleaned, cant figure out what happened, mice getting into the neighbors Viagra or something. This summer I am gonna do a very thorough inspection of the bottem row of tin on the barn, let the cattle graze the grass down on the south side and put chipped granite on the north side. Hopefully I can stop any crevis they can get through. With thousandsof mice I quickly learned they can easily crawl up a 1/8" cable, straight up an post or wall corner, get through a hole the size of a pencil diameter, run up chains links, and jump pretty darned high when been chased by a #12 boot! No rats yet!! That is one thing I do not want, then things give me the creeps. We went through 9 pails of Jaguar, Havoc, and just one bite this year to kill em all(the mice) off. That was more pails than the 1st 3 years here combined. The sticky pads would work good put the dusty conditions quickly ruin the effectiveness. No Calf yet either, fine with me, let this snow melt and dry up, then let the calves come.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
