The combustion in a diesel is essentially a detonation, while the combustion in a gasoline engine is more of a controlled burn. That's why a diesel sounds a lot like gas engine that's knocking. The components of a diesel are seldom the same as an equivalent gas engine. Remember the GM 350 CID diesel? Even with beefed up components, it didn't last. The high pressures of the diesel are tough on pistons, rods, etc.
