A guy wants me to seed hay (grass mix) on his land. Very light soil. He disked the heck out of it but it is very rough. What wwould I charge him? Provided he buys the seed. Also, since it is very light soil I say it should have a cover crop , like oats. So he says I can put an oats crop in when I seed it for him into hay. I dont think he would get a good stand if I plant the seed with the oats, no grass seeder on the drill. I thought i would drill in the oats the rate I need for a crop, and then a day later seed the grass mix with a brillion seeder. Also... what rate hay should be seeded, he says he doesnt want to spend alot, one place told him 10# an acre, one place 25#, I was thinking anything from 18-23 depending on what seed we end up buying. The guy is getting all antsy as he wanted it done right now. I still think a fall seeding would be better. He also didnt want to put down fertilizer,(cost), but I feel he needs it or it isnt gonna take off good. What I recommened he dowes is have the coop seed it( run a packer, air seed it then run a drag over it) the coop mix has a rye grass that takes off to green up fast and hold the soil. That would cost $52 seed, $54 fertilizer, and $6.50 to air seed, and they will stand behind theis mix and application method. So about $113 an acre, plus the cost to have someone run a packer over it. I would like to help the guy out, but it is getting frustrating with how quick he wants it done, and he initially sounded kinda surprised that he would have to buy the seed. His biggest issue is he wants it established quick so he doesnt have any green acres( reduced ag tax rate) issues. Can one share some advise, cost recommendations?? Thank You.

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
