Directv completes a credit check on the person when setting up an account. With the amount of fraud over the years, its a step to prevent that. The social numbers have been a requirement for more than 3 years that I know of for new accounts. The credit card is the same thing, if you disappear with their equipment prior to the contract term date, they charge that authorization number for the equipment that is not returned. You are not required to enroll in credit card auto pay, but a card is required to setup the account with a $25 open to buy. Since you are requesting services from them, they are legally allowed to require social numbers of the account holder as well as date of birth. If you refuse, they are not required to setup an account for you and will not provide services to you. Its that simple. Dish Network is identical plus they require credit card auto pay and paperless billing to take advantage of promotions. I sell both.
