I don't know about going through the cover plate, but, I do know that a lot of very bad (and expensive) things can happen to the TA if you do what you described. It was drilled into me as a kid: never free wheel with the TA and never, ever use the TA to brake suddenly with the engine. It has to do with suddenly reversing the direction of the torque and the TA wasn't made to take it.
