B fluid level

Can anyone tell me how much gear lube to put in trans. also, does trans. and rear end flow together or are they separate boxes?? I drained fluid out rearend below pto housing. Got maybe 3 qts of milky gearlube. I just bought 1946 "B". Thanks, Greg
