Lo-Boy

Many thanks to all that helped me with diagnosing my 1959 Cub Lo-Boy up to this point. The tractor is now running, but here is the new problem: This should have been a dead give-away when I was looking at buying this tractor, but there was a piece of wire attached near the clutch pedal so that you could depress the pedal and wire it into the disengaged position. Also, the top shifter plate only had 4 bolts in it.
Reason: transmission stuck in gear. My Cub (probably all Cubs?) has a 3 speed transmission. Now that it is running, when I shift it into a gear (it acts like it is shifting)all the tractor does is bog down like the transmission is binding, obviously trying to go into two gears at once. Any gear does the same.
Is this a semi-easy fix? What do I look for or do once I remove the shifter plate? I am willing (and I think able) to do anything it will need. But is this a simple or common problem?
