An M farmall was originally a 6 volt positive ground system. Alot of battery boxes were discarded over the years becuase of deterioration and a bigger 12 volt battery wouldn't fit in them. It is very hard to find a tractor for sell that has an original electrical system that is all functional. Most of these electrical systems have been tampered with over the years or have had things eliminated. To understand how one is currently set up requires an inspection. It may be set up for one of several ways. Postive ground 6 volt, negative ground 6 volt, and negative or positve ground 12 volt. I have also heard of people putting 8 volt battery's in. The thing of it is, if some one converted things over they may of eliminated something (like lights) or not done everything right. Alot of people try to figure out the tampered with system and don't even understand how the original system was or worked. I encourage people to work with and understand the original system before working with a tampered one. It is just to bad that there is not enough of the original systems around. Chances are they wind up with a converted tampered one that isn't right or incomplete. To answer your question directly I will start with a question. How do you know your system is converted to 12 volt? I assume that you have found an alternator or different lights have been replaced or added that makes it a dead giveaway that it was converted to 12 volt. An alteranotor has to have a negative ground. A converted generator has to be polarized the way the battery is hooked up. Bringing spark to your coil has to be reduced from 12 to 6 volt and ran through the coil according to how the battery is hooked up. If you have negative ground you hook up hot wire to positive post of coil and negative post of coil for positive ground. If you have a working mag you skip the part about the coil wire hook up. That is only for distributers. I am not going to do any more rattling on here on each little way it can be so if you have anymore questions post another message with more info.

Ford Super Dexta - by Anthony West. The rusty blue tractor caught my eye as my truck zipped by the farm implement business. It looked so fornlorn amongst the lineup of newer equipment. But it was just the right size for my small farm. I stopped in and asked the proprietor for further information. "It's a 64 Ford Super Dexta", he said. "It's a tough little tractor, although it's a hard starter being a diesel and all." He did manage to get it running, compliments of a can of ether. Once started it putted along pretty good. It
