Magneto/battery with out alternator generator?

I have a friend who claims to have an H with a magneto and battery setup without a generator or alternator.... Confused? So are we.. The battery is used for starting the tractor and running the lights. How in the world does the battery stay charged? (Besides using a battery charger) I have not seen the tractor personally, but he says it's quite obvious the tractor doesn't have a generator or alternator... So to settle this puzzler, could someone post some pictures of their alternator/generator setup, and a picture of a magneto setup on the tractor? This will help my buddy figure out what he's got. Or if some can shed some light on subject, please advise. thanks
