How High Can a 6 Volt Generator Be Turned Up?

I once read a post that a generator could be turned up to 12 or maybe 24 volts. If this is the case, I would like to change my M to 12 volt. Since I have a magneto, I only need to keep the battery charged for starting. Can I put a 12 volt battery on the tractor, turn up my generator, and eliminate all my light switch wiring? Would I be better to get a Delco type 10-SI alternator and go from there.
