Purple Martins dying

17, 22, 24,30 degree nights, and cold, wet days and the bugs are not flying, so the purple martins are dying. I have lost about half of mine. Bought crickets, mealworms and even put out scrambled eggs. Tried shooting the crickets up in the air with a blow gun. A neighbor has done all of the above with success, but he is around all the time to work with them and I travel. The trees are all burned back, the wheat probably severely damaged, most folks almost ran out of hay, we had 3" of ice on the ground for 6 weeks, longer than my 80 year old neighbor ever remembers.
