986 Electrical Problems

Recently I have found myself faced with dead batteris when I go to start my 986. If I charge them up and let it sit over night, it's fine. When running, it doesn't take too long until the voltage has fallen way off. I've checked the voltage at the large lug on the alternator, and it's reading about 9V when running, 11.6 when off. Since I don't have a wiring diagram, I'm not sure where else to look. Before I replace the alternator, does anyone have a suggestion (the belts are tight)?
