I found the problem. I knew the battery was good (actually I had jumper cords from my pickup to the tractor and it wouldn't crank even with the truck's engine running). Preparing to remove the starter I cleaned out a large accumulation of crud, built up from dripped hydraulic oil, battery leakage, chaff, etc. After cleaning it off I hit the starter switch one last time; as you can guess it spun quickly and fired right up. I don't understand how junk underneath the starter was draining off current but it must've been grounding something. So next I put the 6 volt battery and old coil back on (with no alternator or generator) and of course it started again. So now maybe I don't need the big alternator (although I still have a generator/regulator problem, which is why I started to convert to 12 volt in the first place). But then a three pound coffee can and a little JB Weld might give the hood a custom look...
