Use Grease If Necessary

If the seals are bad, you will likely dribble out the oil in a few days or even hours. So, you can try adding oil. But if it all leaks out in 48 hours or so, consider using grease like Georgky says. By the way, you do NOT fill through vent plug! Simply remove the vent plug and make sure it is clean and not clogged and replace it. In all probability it IS clogged; radical temperature change in combination with a plugged vent causes most seal failure. On the left side of the steering gear housing (left as you look at the FRONT of the housing) is a second, somewhat larger plug. This is the fill AND level plug. In other words, fill to the top of THIS plug hole, not the vent plug hole. There is a third, smaller plug, horizontally as opposed to vertically oriented, beneath the filler plug. This, as you can no doubt surmize, is the drain plug.
