On my B, It was pretty obvious what the position of the gears should be for neutral. I put the transmission gears in their neutral position and the shifter in neutral, and put it together. It took a couple tries to get it back together without moving a gear out of position, though. I could tell I had it wrong, 'cause when I "bumped" the starter the engine wouldn't crank.
