Frank, The Farmall 706 Diesel in either version was a good tractor. The D282 engine uses glow plugs to start and is an American engine and it and variations of it were used in lots of IH equipment. Parts are resonable and easy to come by. It is a good engine and if the glow plugs are kept up, will start in any weather. The German built D409 may actually be a better designed engine, but when it comes time to overhaul it, it is a much more expensive engine to rebuild. Personally, I would rather have a 706 with the D282 engine, but both are good tractors. The shift linkage is the weakest point about the tractor and this can be updated to the 756 linkage. The rest of the tractor is bullet proff reliable. Harold H
