Harold, 15 years ago when it was just International Harvester, I think you are right when you say the German Diesel was much more expensive to OH than the D-282. Nowadays, I don't know if they are. Remember, Case purchased the Neuss, Germany plant in the Case-IH merger & kept the engine plant going there until a couple years ago when the German Diesel could no longer meet today's stringent emissions rules. Because of this, common parts such as sleeves, pistons, gaskets, bearings are readily available an reasonable prices. I believe if you buy D-282 parts from Case-IH that Case has to purchase them from Navistar(maybe not). Just so you know, we have a 706 with the D-282 at the farm that Dad bought new & has 8-9000 hours on it & has had everything replaced in the engine except the block. The head cracked & has been replaced, I broke the crankshaft & has had 3-4 sets of sleeves & pistons. Don't get me wrong, as I love this old girl. She is considered part of the family(probably for the fact that it has been in the family longer than I have been on this earth). However, my brother always used to say if anybody but Dad bought this tractor new, it would have been traded off many years ago, but Dad persisted with it. Engine always seemed to run warm. Dad always used to talk about ahow it would run hot pulling something, then he would hook up our 400 gas with 450 Sleeves & pistons & the 400 would pull it just as fast as the 706 & run cooler. The best thing that ever happened to it was when Dad bought the new 1086 to replace the 706 as our main tractor.
