Mark, I have an old Allis Chalmers running on a 12 alternator with an internal regulator and the system is rev. sensitive. In order for an alternator to charge it must receive exciter voltage from an outside source. The manner in which this is fed to the alternator can vary. Some of the reworked one wire alternators also have a rectifier in the system to prevent discharge during periods of no use. I do not want you to harm your tractor but I would like you to rev. the engine repeatedly several times in seccession to the maximun rev.s you feel comfortable with. So doing will tend to excite the alternator thus causing it to charge. If you will remember when you went to NAPA they drove the unit off of an electric motor (1725 RPM) through as belt system that increased the speed even more. You are running 1800 RPM or less. If you try this and the system starts charging repost.
