I've welded lots of oil pans for stock car engines using 1/16th welding rods, not bronze. We would cut the bottom out of the pan and deepen it by welding in the bottom of another pan. I think the trick is to heat the whole area, not just the area being welded, and let it cool slowly. We also relieved any stress with a body hammer and dolly.
