Stephen, I had my transmission completely pulled out a couple of years ago, and you can access everything from the top of the transmission case. The end that's inside the tractor connects to the back of the countershaft. You'll have to remove the belt pulley, steering column, gas tank, and transmission cover (take the fenders off, too). You'll see the sliding gears and the countershaft below it. The sliding gear shaft needs to be removed to get to the countershaft, and you remove the hub that's in the hydraulic pump cavity (you'll need to remove the pump, too); the other end bolts into the transmission case. The front of the countershaft has a "bushing" you need to unscrew, and the rear end (where the PTO connects) has a snap ring you need to remove. While you're in there, check out the gear teeth and the guides/supports for the gear shifter forks. It's kind of a pain to do, but it was fun the first time I did it. You should get a parts book (~$55 new), because they're very descriptive and show how it all goes together.
