Fred, Interesting info you've gotten already from Bob M and others. My take on it is that you probably don't have enough electrical accessories going to really need the increased power of an alternator. Lights are about it for most tractors, and if you're like me - they get real use maybe 3 to 4 times a year. So the purpose of the setup is to charge the battery to get the tractor started next time around. Seemed to me that the battery was the crux of the matter, and even a half-way VR/gen setup would keep a good batt going longer than a full tilt alt setup would do with a slunky battery (good cables being a given either way if you stay with 6 volts). So with the above logic (if you can call it that) I ponied up for an Optima sealed 6 volt batt. No regrets - yet. If I get crazy and put a megawatt radio, or electric pump sprayer or some such thing on the tractor, it's time to say hello to a big amp 6 volt pos ground alternator. Steve
