When the one row high drum was the main picker type, after harvest you would suspend the picker while removing the mounting brackets. You would then roll the tractor from under the picker, remove the bull gears, put the regular tricycle front end back on, remount the rear wheels on the regular axles, remove the picker drive box (where the belt pulley mounts), replace seat, regular shift lever, steering wheel and controls and basicly you were ready to go with regular tractor. As previously stated the flange axle housings remained and did not interfear with any equipment. You did not have to go in the rear end as reverse direction was gained by the bull gears. If you had a low drum picker you did have to remove the transmission top, flip the differential and install the regular shift forks as that is what reversed the direction of the low drum pickers. On the low drum tractor the reverse top was used in both directions. It just had the surfaces machined on both sides of the underside for left hand and right hand shift forks. The same lever would work on eather side and a plate covered the unused hole. Most picker applications used a short shift lever to which an extension was bolted depending on the model, but the part of the shift lever that engaged the forks was the same; high drum, low drum, left or right side. For the last part of your question, the drop boxes are not the same as the cotton picker bull gears. If you use the chain drive boxes you would not have to reverse the transmission. I think the drop boxes would bolt to cotton picker rear housings from M thru 560 which you should be able to find in a Southern salvage yard, but I am not sure. If you are building H through 460 housings from the paver will work. You can also easily find tall 20" cotton picker single front wheels but I think a high clear wide front will be hard to find.
