Cub float adjustment?

My Cub is a '51 and the carb float is flat/circular in shape, and hangs in the carb vertically instead of horizontally, like it shows in the I.T.manual. Often when I start the Cub with the choke, gas runs out where the hose attaches to the air cleaner.The hose was old, and I have since replaced it. Does anyone know how to check the float level on a Cub float that hangs vertically?
