H fanbelt needs to be tightened?

I think my H fan belt needs to be tightened because I can sometimes turn the fan (NO plugs) and it slips on the bottom pulley. I read to loosen the setscrew and turn the big nut. Problem, I know that the big nut hasn't been touched since the 1960's. I didn't try it yet but do those big nuts really get frozen on there? Can I get a wrench on it? Thanks.
