Generator Difference: H and BN

I was graciously given a Generator from an H to use on my BN. Th only thing that looks different is th pulley. It was mentioned that there may be differences between a cutout regulator, and a voltage regulator. These two generators look identical....same number and location of termainals on the regulator...two on one side, one on the other. Does that mean they are the same? Any help would be appreciated.
