Hookup the ammeter like this: - One terminal to the battery + cable at the starter switch. - The other ammeter terminal gets everything else - the wire running to the alternator BAT terminal, the wire feeding the ignition switch and the wire feeding the light switch. When you are finished if the ammeter reads backward - i.e. it indicates "charge" when the lights or ignition are on and the engine is stopped - simply swap the wires on both ammeter terminals. Punch below for a backside view of the wiring for the later (3 position) light switch. The early (4 position) light switch is similar but with an extra resistor and terminal for the generator field - that is left unconnected with an alternator. Good luck!
