Bill, In order to properly check your main and rod bearings you need to have the engine removed from the tractor and mounted in an engine stand. After mounting in the engine stand the engin neds to be turned upside down( oil pan side up) you will need to remove the rod and main bearing caps and use (plastigauge to check the clearences) For the amount of work that is involved in checking the clearences, you should go ahead and have your crankshaft machied by a machine shop, and install oversize bearings. I am not sure if you are having bottom end engine noise or if your question is in checking clearences on a rebuild that you are doing. If you need some more specific information drop me an e-mail at (mirgon@ohiohills.com) and I will try to help you with some more specific information, I will walk you through it if you need help.
