706 Transmission Question

All while I have had this tractor if I pressed the cluch peddle while driving forward up an incline, the tractor would start to roll back. Now it doesnt. If I press the cluch peddel and take it out of gear, it will roll back. This really doesnt pose a problem, but I back up against a stump and went to go forward and it would not come out of gear. I had to shut the tractor off and then it would get out of gear. What could be the cause of this?
