H bull gear removal

I had oil on the brake bands of a 46 H so thought I would replace the bull pinion shaft seal When I removed the brake drum it was severely scored and the 2 pulling points on the cage were broken. I have removed the nut holding the bull gear and the 7 bolts holding the axle carrier to the frame but can't separate it. Is there some secret to removing the axle? Also how would I pull the cage without the 2 pulling points?
