Transmission locked into 2 gears--I think

I have a W6 that seems to have a locked up transmission. It has a history of being caught in two gears. I drove it on to my trailer in low gear with no problem. Tied it down and drove home. When I tried to back it off the trailer it would not move. I can start the tractor with the clutch disengaged. If I try to start with gear shift in nuetral with the clutch engaged the started locks up and the tractor does not try to move like it would be in a single gear. I pulled the gear shift lever and worked to get thje rails all lined up but I still seems to be locked up.
At one point it rolled backward on the trailer when i loosened the tied down chain. That would make me think I had the problem fixed at point in time. Does the end of the gearshift lever ride in any type of "cradle" tyhat would move the rails to shift gears? If so, it is not in there. Alaso, this tractor has a steel gearshift lever knob. Is the WW II deal? The serial number dates it in '46 based o books I have seen. Thanks
