New 12V coil, coil says use with resistor

Napa guy says I have to have a resistor in the circuit. Printed on the coil is says "use with resistor" Napa guy said something about coils running on 9-10 vots or something. I have a 300 farmall, now on 12V. I have no idea about the existing coil. It is really rusty. Please help me clarify the situation.
