farmall H pto shaft

I have a 1940 H. the pto hasnt't worked in years but never needed it, now I wanted to use it so I did a little investigating and pulled the shaft, to my suprise the shaft wasn't broken but it was broken where the output shaft goes into the trany. is it easier to split the case to get it out or take the top cover off. or is there an easier way yet.
