new 6V battery and charging system

The new style spiral wound batteries can only stand 7.5V of charging voltage. The generator/regulator on my H puts out 8.2V at WOT. Two questions - 1) Has anyone run those batteries at higher voltage and had good results ? 2) Is there a practical way to adjust the output on the voltage regulator ? Buy the way, the old battery has a dead cell (~11.5 s.g. max) on the negative end. Does a cell go bad because the plate is damaged, or is there a way to bring them back ?
