I bought a 560 Diesel once that the only way it would start below 35 degrees F was with a log chain and an M in front of it. Darn frustrating when you have a mounted corn picker on it. That winter I pulled the engine and TA down. I had the injector pump checked, injectors checked, glow plugs tested out of the tractor, and the starter rebuilt. When we got to the head it was in bad shape. The valve seats were way below the surface of the head. My machine shop knows what I want and did the valve seats, guides, and valves back up to original factory spec. Put in new sleeves and pistons etc. One day the tractor was sitting outside and the temp was -15 F. It started after some cranking and I was wondering why. When I unplugged the engine heater, the hoses were stone cold; the heater had not been working. Any/all of the above can make it a hard starter. I attributed mine to the poor compression due to the severely worn valve seats. I base this on the fact that it has about 4000 hours on the overhaul and nothing has been worked on since and it will still start on just the glow plugs down to at least 0 F. My 2 cents.
