TA: Use it or Lose it... True?

Just brought a new-to-me 826 home and
played with it a bit more after driving it 18
miles home. In a rainstorm. Ahem! I tried the
TA before purchase and tried it again today on
some hard ground. I engaged it while idling
forward in fourth gear, held the brakes as hard
as I could and fed in a little throttle. Didn't slip.
Almost stalled the engine. Is this a valid test?
It was good and warmed up form the drive
back. Any truth to the rumor to use it or lose it?
The guy I bought it from hadn't used it in four
years. Should I worry? Thanks guys!
