856D starter/solenoid/click,click

Sometimes when you press the starter button, all you get is,click. Don will put a charger on it and the starter will engage immediately when button is pushed. Other times it starts exactly as it should. Batteries are two years old but were drained down for two weeks when the key was left on. If a battery was bad, wouldn't that cause the engine to roll over slowly everytime? It cranks just fine. Is the solenoid bad? Can they get dirty or sticky? Hate to buy parts I don't need to rep;ace.
