I have a 424 diesel, and it's a WONDERFUL little tractor. It will pull the 5' rotary cutter with EASE, as it has almost twice the HP of the little Ford "N"'s lots of folks use to pull similar cutters. They are a cold-blooded diesel, and, for good starting, you need to use the glow plugs before cranking it, and, of course, the glow plug system needs to be in good working order. If it HAS factory power steering, there will be hydraulic steering cylinders mounted to the front axle. If it does NOT have factory power steering, there will be a long steering shaft, with a shaft with lots of "U" joints running from the steering column, under the LH side of the fuel tank, and past the lower left side of the engine, to the steering gear, centered over the front axle. Mine has aftermarket Char-lynn power steering, with the "torque generator" mounted in the steeing shaft, under the front of the fuel tank. I REALLY wish it had the factory power steering! (Anybody that knows of such a setup for sale reasonably, please let me know!)
You can see the steering shaft and torque generator in the photo. Mine has the live PTO option, with the 2-stage clutch, and a 3-point hitch. Does the one you are looking at have those options? So far, the common parts I have needed have been readily available through CNH. Incidently, apparently Mahindra of India, formerly associated with IH, is still making this same basic tractor, although I think the engine is different. When I ordered a PTO lever and some other parts through the CNH dealer, the parts came marked "Made in India", and painted some weird creamy brown color, boxed in CNH boxes!

In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
