Are you sure the expansion plug is not rusted out or damaged? I had one leaking real bad and it turned out to be the plug in the bottom of the housing. I put an automotive freeze plug in it and all was well.
And...you are right...better stand on an old bed sheet when you take it apart...those bearings can go all over the place.
