140 starter

Starter on this tractor a 62' locked up other day. Put tractor in fourth gear and rocked and it would start and turn over again. Am only a poor mechanic on a good day. What may have caused this? And what might be simplest fix to happening again. Got to take carbuerator off and clean and was going to try to fix both while at it. Thanks
