Purpose of a hydraulic check valve?

right now i have 2 valves on the 300u. The one set for single acting has nothing o it. The one set for double acting, has the safety regulator between it and the res. It also has a check valve bolted to the bottom of it. What exaclty does the check vavle do? Is it required on all of these valves setup for double acting? I hope to someday put double acting cylinder on the main lift arms, and am wondering if I will need a checkvavle. In the true sense of a check vavle, I dont see the purpoose, as fluid needs to flow both ways in a double acting setup.
